Travel South America | Mountain Biking down Bolivia’s Death Road as seen on ABC
This is the full footage from a recent TV show filmed with Gravity Assisted Mountain Biking on the World’s Most Dangerous Road (also known as the Death Road) and shown on television in New Zealand. The show gives a great idea of the ride, the road, the legend and the drama. Enjoy!
Question by Jaime: Budget for a years travel around South America – Advice wanted!?
Just wondered if anyone who has actually traveled South America for year could give me some advice on budget. A friend and myself are heading to South America next month and are hoping to see the travels out for a year if we can!…We have a budget of around $ 9,000 -$ 9,500 (after tickets have been payed for) and we were just wondering how far that would get us around South America..and indeed if we could see out the year
We are going to travel Colombia, –> Venezuela,–> (back into Colombia)–> Ecuador,–> Peru,–> Bolivia,–> Chile, –> Argentina,–> Uruguay,–> Paraguay –> Brazil
Not really interested (well yes we are but we wouldn’t loose any sleep if we didn’t go if you know what i mean) about visiting French Guiana, Guyana or Suriname due to the fact that it seems expensive & we would be hassle to get visas etc (We are 2 British travelers by the way)
I know according to the LP the so called cheaper countries are Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia & Argentina so our plan is to spend more time in these cheaper countries…
I know it all depends on your spending habits so im not really looking for any responses that say ‘depends if you like to got out drinking’ or ‘depends if you like going on tours’ etc …Just would be good if someone could give their opinion of a rough ball park figure from someone who has experience and has already been there and done it.
We are two 27 / 29 year old fella’s so we will obviously be spending on going out and sampling the nightlife, however at the same time we will not be going crazy, and will hopefully keeping a good balance to hopefully prolong the finances for the trip
Thanks to all who reply in advance, as this really will be invaluable advice & info for us!
Thanks again!

I apologize as this isn’t really an answer. But, good luck! That sounds like a really fun time. An adventure like that is something everyone wants but very few are actually willing to go through it all to achieve it. Have fun
What do you think? Answer below!

This would be a real blast, but not worth dying for
Needs more dramatization. This seems like a walk in the park compared to other stuff.
Oh, well that makes a lot more sense. I read an article on it about a month ago where they had autos on there still (and I don’t think they mentioned that on the video). I might run it—biking it is another thing.
@yesroh
no cars anymore dude, road is closed, its just a tourist attraction now. the paved section at the start is not the death road.
I think this is pretty stupid—this road is too dangerous to have thrill seekers on it when the autos need all the room they can get
@GravityBolivia You sound like a whiny prick, you know it? Who cares about who is “first” or “second”!
Hope you just don’t make the hard life of local people any tougher… that’s what counts.
@ftn50187 Exactly what I was gonna say!

that would be a blast on my crf 450
I would love to do this on my dirtbike
Gravity commercialized the road in mid-’98 and were riding every day except Monday’s from ’99. During all of ’98 and all of ’99 we never saw any other business riding the road. We have heard claims of people saying they were the first as early as ’80. The reality is that WE were the 1st to turn this ride into a real business. Just because someone else rode a few times a year with a few customers doesn’t make them “first”… at anything other than NOT making a full success of this opportunity.
Tell me one thing :
You guys say that you started this business in 1999 right ?
and i know a company who started that in 1995, so, logically they’re the first, nope ?
besamemucho5 … don’t knock it until you’ve tried it. Funnily enough the whole ride is on A ROAD… as such most serious mountain bikers do not consider this ride challenging enough. However for the backpacker or adventure traveler it is GREAT FUN, not at all akin to chopping ones balls off …
i am glad i am a road biker and not a mountain biker…..if people are looking for a thrill they can always cut their balls off ……that probably be just as exciting
Sorry to hear you broke your record of no deaths dudes…
youre still the company I plan on doing this ride with when I get there tho.
Must have felt gut wrenching to lose a customer after so many safe years.
I guess it was just a matter of time and luck…
great video guys…
